The UEL Dinner Last Night

There are so many people to thank for making this one of the events of the year - about 180 people came to thank County Commissioner Katy Sorenson for her years of service. First of all we want to thank all of the toasters, thank you for your messages. Jim DeFede thank you for your role as a masterful Master of Ceremony. As Commissioner Rolle would say: "You done good."

Motes Orchids, your flowers were smashing especially the Orchid for Katy. Martin Motes made a new hybrid orchid, registering this new orchid as "vanda Katy Sorenson". Thank you Chief of Staff Sylvia Farina for helping us with logistics. Thank you Rusty Pelican for making a delicious dinner for all of us and the view of downtown was spectacular. We thank our Pianists Albert Harum Alvarez and Su-Gi Min.

Best of all, the sense of family in the room was strong - That sense of Community is what Katy inspired, uniting all of us from different corners of the County.

It was a wonderful event. I especially liked Sylvia Farina's top 10 advice to Katy's new staff and Commissioner Carlos Gimenez's proclamation. It was a special event.

  2. Here's the visual aid I needed last night:

Katy is like the placekicker on our team: smaller than most of the players, but she "plays big." If our whole team blows it on the kickoff, she's the "last guy to beat," and she's not afraid to get in front of the bigger guys hurtling down the field.

When Katy gets bowled over by the opposition, we admire her guts for putting herself on the line. When she "holds the line" with a game-saving tackle, Katy is our hero. Either way, she's a Hall of Famer.

Thanks again, Katy. Glad you're on our team.

  3. Commissioner Sorenson is a wonderful inspiration to so many people.

Her leadership skills are undeniable. In South Dade we are a better community because of her commitment. Additionally, it is without doubt, that the entire Miami-Dade community has benefited as a result of her fortitude and spunk.

Even though Katy will not be sitting on the commission, she will still be in our lives offering that same leadership and love for the people she has served so well over the years!

I look forward to continuing to work along side of Commissioner Sorenson for many years to come.

Katy and her staff have been incredible friends to Redland and to me. She has guided me through such political mine fields at County Hall, I could write a book about it (well, maybe I will one day).

So, thanks for all you do and have done. You will be greatly missed.

PS - I want a copy of that Proclamation by Gimenez. I'm still laughing at that one. It was the best!
